Long before Superman ever left his doomed planet, there was a Krypton in the mountains of eastern Kentucky. Its post office originally opened in 1907 under the name Glenn, but on June 4, 1918, it was renamed Krypton, a full twenty years before Superman made his debut in Action Comics #1. Local tradition held that krypton gas bulbs inspire the name. The longtime postmaster said he regularly received requests for Krypton postmarks from chemists and Superman fans.
